It’s the 50th anniversary of the very first Earth Day. On April 22, 1970, over 20 million Americans mobilized and took to the streets across the country. This action launched the environmental movement and started the first conversations about climate change.
Five decades later and we’re awakening every morning to a very different planet. Silent skies, empty roads and vacant parking lots are marking a (temporary) social and economic pause created by the global COVID-19 pandemic. Amid the fears of infection, the stress of interrupted employment, and the anxiety of social isolation, the planet has quickly rebounded in many ways. Venetian canals are running clear, airborne pollution has dropped by up to 50%, animals are tentatively reclaiming parklands, and city-dwellers are rediscovering quiet, star-filled night skies. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime revelation of what’s possible.

We’ve been quietly working on a transformative new product that uses the power of our platforms to actively fight climate change. We’ll share more details very soon, but for now, we’re proud to say that we’ve committed to funding the planting of 5 million new native trees around the world. Trees are natural carbon sinks, absorbing damaging CO2 from the atmosphere and directly helping reduce global warming. We’re partnering with organizations like Eden Reforestation Projects, to plant and sustain healthy forests in countries like Madagascar, Indonesia, Nepal, Kenya, Mozambique and Haiti. We’re intentionally designing each project to create grassroots rewards too. Funding from every project enriches every local community as residents are employed and fairly paid to plant and nurture native trees.
