Make it a green year.

Bushfires, drought, extreme weather events, microplastics, garbage gyres and soaring global temperatures…. the evidence of a changing climate is irrefutable and all around us.

This climate crisis is the greatest threat that this generation has faced. We need to take action. And, just as this crisis was created by billions of tiny decisions, we can reverse it by making better choices, day by day. At CarltonOne Engagement, we started taking practical steps last year, and are ready to accelerate our own green initiatives.

Improving the office environment.

We recently moved our global headquarters and took the opportunity to upgrade all aspects of our office ‘environment’. It began with a simple, but powerful rule: no more paper. CarltonOne is fortunate to be able to run our global business on some of the most advanced technology platforms. Switching to a digital-only office made a lot of sense, and it has brought the added benefit of streamlining our administration.

Our new paper ban worked so well that we quickly expanded it to include disposable plastics, too. Did you know that a million plastic water bottles are bought globally every minute? Not in our office. No plastic water bottles, no plastic bags, straws or paper cups. Instead, every employee receives their own refillable stainless steel water bottle and ceramic coffee cup. We also installed filtered water dispensers to keep everyone healthy and hydrated.

Our all-new meeting rooms are equipped for seamless video and audio conferencing, further reducing the need for carbon-heavy travel. And those shiny new tables and chairs? Our furniture is a combination of upcycled wood and plastic, with 85% of the raw materials sourced from within North America. In our boardroom we installed a flexible Movable Wall that is sustainably produced by recycling steel, aluminum, oil and cardboard.

Transforming our products.

When we first launched CarltonOne, our dream was to make it easy for members to redeem points for amazing rewards, and then get those rewards fast. That’s why we always seek out local suppliers in each of the 81 countries in which we operate. Local suppliers means we’re investing in local communities with local jobs and can deliver rewards to our members from a shorter distance with a smaller carbon footprint.

Today, as our catalog of rewards has expanded to offer a vast array of merchandise, experiences, travel, digital media, mobile top-up and more, we’re finding new ways to stay green. For example, we’re working with our suppliers to eliminate harmful chemicals and wasteful packaging, and we’re encouraging clients to use e-gifts and other digital alternatives to plastic gift cards.

We’re just getting started.

As individuals, there are many things we can do to minimize our personal impact on the environment - eating less meat, flying less, commuting by public transport and choosing less plastic packaging. We’re proud of the many significant changes we’ve made here at CarltonOne. We’ve been genuinely surprised at how little we miss our papers, folders and water bottles. But we’re not done yet. We’ve got big plans for 2020, and can’t wait to share them with you right here on our blog.
