Why a memorable trip trumps a cash bonus every time

With the latest Gallup study indicating that a staggering 87 per cent of employees worldwide are disengaged at work, it's essential that companies find a way to keep their team members motivated. Travel is one of the best ways to do this because it is flexible, offers choice and presents exciting opportunities.

Need a holiday? Your employees probably feel that way too. Especially as a staggering 87 per cent of employees worldwide are not engaged at work according to the latest Gallup poll. While cash is the traditional means of attempting to boost engagement, it's travel that actually has the greatest impact.

Cash isn't king

You might look around at the 87 per cent of your workforce that is "disengaged" at work and think pay rises are the answer. However, something like a pay rise or a cash bonus tends to happen only once a year (or less). When the promise of cash incentives are so far off, it's likely that your employees will simply stop trying.

Instead, non-monetary incentives - particularly travel - tend to have a much greater effect.

Travel increases appreciation and engagement

A study investigating attitudes towards travel incentives in the UK, commissioned by the Society for Incentive Travel Excellence (SITE), has found that travel rewards have a significant impact on employee engagement:

  • 88 per cent of respondents felt appreciated when their company used travel incentive programs.

  • 80 per cent said an incentive program increased loyalty.

  • 75 per cent said it increased trust towards their company.

  • 76 per cent found travel programs motivating or extremely motivating.

Instead, non-monetary incentives - particularly travel - tend to have a much greater effect.

Just why is travel such an effective incentive?

1) Appeals to everyone

The big problem with other incentives is that one reward is unlikely to appeal to every single person in your organisation. However, travel tends to have universal appeal, especially when you present your employees with a choice of travel options.

2) Sticks in people's minds

A salary that automatically goes into an employee's bank account isn't really something they'll associate with incentives - instead, it's seen as just a matter of course. Travel, on the other hand, is much more memorable. This is especially the case if employees post their trip on social media, showing their team mates what happens when you work hard at your organisation.

3) Works for any organisation

Travel doesn't have to mean a $5,000 holiday. It could be a day trip to a spa or an overnight stay an hour away. This means whatever a company's rewards budget, there's a travel incentive scheme to suit.

4) Presents a new opportunity for people

Travel incentives offer employees the chance to do something they might never have considered doing. For example, tickets to big sports events, particularly those in other cities or countries, may have been something an employee always thought was unattainable. Now, with your incentive scheme, it's something they can achieve - all because of their employer. The appreciation they will feel for your company as a result isn't to be underestimated.

Likewise, many employees may see travel as something they have to take extended leave for. This is especially the case here in Australia, where we're not exactly close to other countries. Travel rewards will mean your team can work and travel at the same time, which in turn means you won't have to worry about your best talent leaving for a year to go to Europe!
