It's never easy to keep your employees motivated. The latest survey data says it's especially tough when you're managing millennials.

It's difficult to run a successful business unless you have employees on board who are engaged and enthusiastic about their work. If people don't feel good about coming in to the office each morning to do their jobs, their performance is likely to stagnate, and the company's results are likely to be worse off overall.

Motivating people to work hard is always difficult - especially when you have a younger workforce.

Motivating people to work hard is always difficult, but according to the latest survey data, it's especially tough when you have a younger workforce. Millennials today have proven difficult to engage. If your staff includes many members of this generation, you may need to think more critically about what's driving them to achieve in their positions.

Millennials are really struggling in Australia

Everyone worries to some extent about how to motivate employees, but the issue is especially worrisome when your staff skews younger. A recent study from Deloitte revealed that millennials - defined as those born between 1982 and 1999 - are more pessimistic, disillusioned and unhappy with their jobs than any other age group, and that this is especially noticeable in Australia.

The organisation found that 58 per cent of Australian millennial employees expect to leave their current jobs within two years. This is far higher than the global average of 38 per cent. Clearly, if companies want to keep their younger staff members engaged, they have work to do.

Reversing a trend of flagging engagement

With the knowledge that employee engagement is flagging, what can companies do to change matters? For starters, Fast Company recommends rebuilding people's confidence in their companies' leaders. If people come in to work each day with a sense of trust in their bosses, they'll be more motivated to do good work for them.

Of course, another proven tactic is giving people a bit of extrinsic motivation. If your company is able to establish an employee rewards program that empowers workers to achieve more, that can only mean good things for your future.

Taking employee recognition up a notch

The best way to empower employees is by having tangible measures in place for employee rewards and recognition. That's why, at Power 2 Motivate, we put a premium on rewards and recognition programs that are fun, collaborative and encourage people to do fantastic work.

Our programs are customisable to fit the needs of your organisation. You choose the behaviours you'd like to measure and the metrics to measure them; we will be happy to take care of the rest. Just get in touch with us, and we'll be ready to get started.
