The world’s oceans play a vital role in combating climate change.
While many people are aware of rising sea temperatures and rising sea levels due to global warming, fewer know that the oceans also absorb up to 30% of dangerous greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, which dissolves in water. Once dissolved, that carbon can be stored in underwater meadows of seagrass.
70% water, 100% amazing
And while trees absorb and store (or sequester) carbon for their lifespan (on average about 100 years), scientist estimate that deep ocean carbon sinks and seagrass can store over twice as much (up to 83,000 tonnes of carbon per square kilometre) for over 1,000 years.
Unfortunately, our oceans are no more the pristine environments they once were. Overfishing, micro-plastics, acidification and toxic dumping are quickly poisoning the waters that cover 70% of our planet. It’s time to do more to protect and harness this climate-positive resource.
Announcing Evergrow Oceans, for Power2Motivate
On World Oceans Day, we’re announcing the development of Evergrow Oceans, a new Eco-Action initiative within Power2Motivate - our popular enterprise reward and recognition platform.
Evergrow Oceans turns every transaction directly into funding for ocean protection and preservation. We’ll be supporting organizations that are dedicated to both advocacy and action, using emerging technology and social activism to drive change.
Power2Motivate (P2M) is a customizable enterprise talent recognition, rewards and incentives platform. With over 1,000 clients in markets around the world, P2M can be infinitely customized to help organizations make work mean more by inspiring, motivating and rewarding performance. Starting soon, our 2.5 million members will be able to learn more about ocean conservation and cleanup campaigns, and experience the impact that their P2M transactions are directly funding.
Evergrow Oceans joins Evergrow Trees as our second major Eco-Action engine. In partnership with Eden Reforestation Projects, we’ve already funded over 6 million trees in high-priority communities in Madagascar, Mozambique, Nepal, Indonesia and Kenya. This funding helps support local full-time employment and income security. Protecting and nurturing new trees is just as vital as the initial planting. Our funding also ensures the monitoring and long-term viability of seedlings, so they can mature into lush forests and healthy mangroves.
